Innovative Usage of Vibratory Bowl Feeders – Elscint Ball Sorting & Grading Machine

Elscint manufactures has developed an innovative Ball Sorting & Grading Unit for small balls. The Elscint Ball Sorting and Grading Unit is designed to feed, sort and grade small balls which require to be graded / sorted according to their thickness. This Unit operates at a speed in excess of 300 pieces per minute depending on the size of the balls. The system utilizes an Elscint vibratory bowl feeder of suitable mode amongst the 6 models of Elscint vibratory bowl feeders. The bowl feeder feeds the balls to a set of powered gauge rolls. These are powered by an Elscint geared motor of suitable rating. The bowl feeder for feeding of the balls has to be correctly designed as balls have a tendency to roll back in a bowl feeder and do not move up the track. However, in the special type of bowl designed by Elscint, this does not take place. For the sorting of the balls, the inclination of the rolls, plus adjustable roll spacing from one end to the other enables parts to move / travel easily and rapidly into the desired position, while moving them to the discharge point. Undersized balls are first separated, followed by those within tolerance. Oversize and / or damaged balls continue to the end of the rolls and are discharged into a separate container. An important feature is that the rolls being counter-rotating does not bind or grip the parts and are extremely sensitive to fine tolerances. The basic unit works on a fixed speed but variable speed too is possible.

In this particular case, the balls to be segregated or sorted were having dia 1.34 mm and 1.50 mm respectively. Due to the small size of the bowls, a very small bowl having diameter 130 mm was fabricated for this purpose. The vibratory bowl feeder used was Model 100 which is having a 15 VA rating and is full wave in operation. Due to its full wave operation, the current consumption is very less and it can work for 24 hours continuously. The customer had a problem of mix up of these two sizes of balls which numbered 20000 per day. It was not practically possible to check and segregate these many balls manually and hence, the Elscint Ball Sorting and Grading Machine has been very helpful for the customer.
